Council tenants across Milton Keynes will be asked to pay less than 1% extra on their rent from next April.
Milton Keynes Council's Liberal Democrat cabinet thrashed out the various options to keep the increase as low as possible without affecting services. They arrived at an increase figure of 0.73%, just 54p a week extra on the average council rent.
Councillor Chris Williams, cabinet member responsible for housing, said: "We looked long and hard at how we could arrive at a figure lower than the government estimate (0.8%), without any material effect on services, and we believe this is a really good deal for tenants."
Jeanette Marling, Chair of the Lakes Resident Association, added: "This is the lowest rent increase we've had for years and in the current financial climate, where people may be struggling, it's nice to know the Council is doing everything it can to ease the financial burden on council tenants."
