Landlord Fined for Dumping Waste

1.17.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 26th May 2008

Landlord Simon Banisi was fined nearly £2,000 at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court on 20 May for dumping waste outside properties he owns in the city centre.

Mr Banisi, of Redland Drive, Loughton, was fined £1,000 for two offences of fly-tipping and was ordered to pay £925.23 in costs after household rubbish and garden waste was found outside his homes in South Ninth Street in September. The court heard that council officers from the Safer Communities Unit had previously warned Mr Banisi of his responsibilities to clear waste correctly at other properties he owns in the city. When visiting the site in September, council officers found two armchairs, tree cuttings, a vacuum cleaner and other rubbish. Mr Banisi was found guilty of allowing waste to be stored illegally contrary to fly-tipping laws from the Environment Protection Act 1990.

Newly elected Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Galloway said: "Throwing waste out on the street like this is not acceptable. It costs local council tax-payers to clean up after such irresponsible residents and businesses. This is an example of the increased enforcement action introduced by the Liberal Democrat-run Council. This person has paid the price for spoiling the quality of the environment in which we live. Not only has he had to pay a hefty fine, but he now has a criminal conviction as well."
