Christmas Bonus Payout on Cash-for-Trash Scheme

10.25.00pm GMT Fri 21st Dec 2007

A £1000 cash prize is up for grabs by one lucky Milton Keynes recycler.

In the run up to Christmas, Milton Keynes Council's successful Cash-for-Trash scheme will pay out a bonus to one household using pink sacks. Bradley Walsh, starring in Aladdin at Milton Keynes Theatre, is backing the project. So there will also be a prize of a family ticket to the Christmas panto, as well as a Christmas hamper donated by John Lewis.

Cash-for-Trash, which has been running for six months, has seen prizes of at least £100 given away every week.

The scheme aims to reward those that are recycling, while encouraging others to participate in the kerbside scheme with the possibility of winning cash.

Liberal Democrat councillor Douglas McCall, cabinet member responsible for recycling, is delighted with the success of this initiative: "During the first five months of Cash-for-Trash, kerbside recycling has increased by over 20% compared to 2006."

The Cash-for-Trash prize fund has been donated by Community Waste, the contractors who run the Council's recycling facility.
