Liberal Democrat Councillor Campaigns for City Status

7.37.00pm GMT Tue 11th Dec 2007

Liberal Democrat cabinet member, councillor Sam Crooks, has posted a petition on the Government's petition web site. The councillor for Middleton ward is urging all residents of Milton Keynes to sign the petition to award city status to Milton Keynes.

To sign the petition, go to: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/City-statusMK/

The petition reads: "We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to recommend to the Lord Chancellor and the Queen that Milton Keynes be awarded city status."

Sam Crooks said: "Milton Keynes is now the largest town in the United Kingdom without city status and is still growing by 4,500 people per year. 40 years old this year, it is the home of the Open University, the country's newest football stadium, the largest under-cover shopping centre in Europe, and Britain's first city centre ecumenical church. We feel really proud of Milton Keynes - its design, vibrancy, sustainability and diversity. We ask for national recognition of our success and of our potential through the award of city status."
