Announcing MK's Golden Wonders for 2007

2.10.00pm GMT Sun 25th Nov 2007

Winners of a competition to find the Borough's most inspirational older people are to be announced next month.

Over the past six months the hunt has been on to find older people over 55 who have made a major contribution to the Borough and the community at large. At a prestigious ceremony on Thursday 13 December at 6pm at the Civic Offices, the names of the winners of the 2007 Golden Wonders competition are due to be announced. Milton Keynes Council and Milton Keynes Age Concern are jointly promoting the event, now in its third year, where £1,000 will be awarded to the winners to spend on their favourite community projects.

Among last year's winners were:

• Mr and Mrs Bhabutta for their work with the Dosti Club

• Nelly Farran for being a good neighbour and working with schools

• Bill Green for his dedication to charity and sport.

Liberal Democrat councillor Irene Henderson, cabinet member responsible for social care, said: "We have had some great entries and it is uplifting to see that community spirit is alive and well - whatever your age. Being over 55 gives many people the time to open up opportunities to do all sorts of things that they never did before - from helping in schools to sky diving."
