Liberal Democrat Councillor and Royal British Legion stalwart, Councillor Douglas McCall asked Milton Keynes Council at their meeting on 9 October to support the Royal British Legion's "Honour the Covenant" Campaign.

Councillor McCall is a holder of the HM Armed Forces veterans' badge, having spent 15 years in uniform, and as "Major McCall" led the Remembrance Parade in Newport Pagnell for many years. He is now President of the Newport Pagnell Royal British Legion Club. Douglas said: "At the recent national Liberal Democrat conference I attended, a packed fringe meeting at which the Director-General of the Royal British Legion spoke about the campaign. More and more pressure is being placed on our brave servicemen and women and it is only right that as they fight for our country they can rely on the support of the nation and of the Government. You don't need to support the Iraq war to support the service personnel fighting it.

"Servicemen and women need to be able to rely on the Government to look after them and their families if they are injured or killed. That is why I called on the Council to support the British Legion's campaign, and I am delighted that all parties on the Council responded positively."
