Check Out Your Own Library Books10.55.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 18th Oct 2007 An innovative way to make borrowing books easier is being introduced in Milton Keynes - a self-service library area. Supermarket-style scanners will allow library members to borrow, renew and return a pile of books in one easy operation. The new service is expected to be installed at the city's main library in Silbury Boulevard early next year as part of a refurbishment programme. The aim is to free staff to advise users on where to find books, to give advice and information and to help with other enquiries. They will also be on hand for those customers who prefer to have their books issued in the traditional way. Libraries are already embracing modern technology by offering free internet access via a computer suite, and the Council is now investing more heavily in this new revolution to make using the library service even easier than ever before. Milton Keynes Central Library already issues more books than any other library in a UK unitary authority, but it is hoped that the new systems will encourage lots of new borrowers too. Liberal Democrat councillor Euan Henderson, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said: "Libraries remain a great way for everyone to enjoy books, music, films and other resources. By investing in technology, we hope to improve the experience and make the service more accessible to everyone. "Milton Keynes is already leading the way using new technology. Our virtual library services received two and a quarter million visits last year - the highest number of virtual visits of any unitary authority in the UK."
