Commenting on his decision not to stand for a cabinet post, Cec Tallack said: "I have been the cabinet member for resources and performance for five years. I feel it is time for a change and want to move on to different challenges. I will still be a very active member of the group having just been elected as its chair. I know Phil Gerrella will do an excellent job".

The successful Lib Dem team celebrate at the count

The Lib Dem Leader said: "I am delighted to have such a strong team. The Liberal Democrats have stated that they are willing to continue with the challenge of running the Council as they are still the largest Party by a significant margin. We have had discussions with the opposition Parties and the Tories are happy with our continuing to run the Council. Labour did offer to do a "deal" but the Liberal Democrats stood for election on their own pledges and have no intention of undertaking any deals that would undermine the platform on which we stood for election".

In addition to Cec Tallack being elected as Chair of the Lib Dem Group, Mike Galloway has been elected as Secretary of the Group and Vanessa McPake continues as Press Officer.
