Audit Commission's 'Health Check' of Council is Encouraging

Resident satisfaction and improving services have been praised in the Audit Commission's annual 'health check'.

The Annual Audit and Inspection Letter follows the Comprehensive Performance Assessment, as well as other inspections of the Council.

The report notes:

• The Council is improving adequately - residents' satisfaction is up and. although achievements have been mixed compared with other councils, this is recognized and changes are being made

• The Council has responded positively to inspections of its services during the year

• The Council's financial position on 31 March 2005 was healthier than it has been for a number of years

• The Council is strengthening its approach to monitoring contracts, although it needs to identify a clear, long-term vision for the way in which procurement will shape service delivery and performance.

The letter from District Auditor Andy Burns concludes: "The Council has taken a positive and constructive approach to our audit and inspection."

Liberal Democrat cabinet member Councillor Sam Crooks, said: "This is encouraging news and gives us some good foundations on which to build. The Audit Commission has recognised our strengths, but has also been there for us in helping to guide us through - and offer support - in those areas that need attention."
