It's a Win-Win Situation!

Composting the autumn leaves swept from the streets is saving council taxpayers landfill costs and saving on fertiliser costs for the farmer. It's a win-win situation.

It's that time of year again when the nights are drawing in, the weather is getting colder and the Council's leaf-collecting team hit the streets.

Following the success of last year's trial, this autumn Milton Keynes Council is one of the few councils in the UK to be composting the leaves cleared from the streets. The leaves collected will be taken to a local farm for turning into compost, so that they can be used as a fertiliser and soil improver.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Douglas McCall, cabinet member for the environment, said: "Composting the leaves from the city's streets is another example of the Council's commitment to recycling. It is vitally important that as a city we do everything we can to reduce the amount of waste we produce that goes to landfill."
