Major Improvements to Milton Keynes' Community Alarm System

8.54.05pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 28th Oct 2004

A lifeline to provide reassurance and help in their own home for those who need it has been extended to cover more people. Help is now available at the touch of a button, following major improvements to Milton Keynes Council's community alarm system.

People who fear for their personal safety can now have peace of mind for just £2.50 a week.

New software has been installed, allowing hundreds more people to become connected to the system through individual Lifeline alarms, which can be activated by a pendant worn on the hip or wrist, or around the neck.

Lifeline alarms are often used by older people, who might be prone to falls and injuries, but are increasingly used by people living in fear of a violent ex-partner or stalker. Anyone who lives alone and feels they might need instant contact and reassurance from the Alarm Centre's well-trained staff can benefit from the system. Local businesses could consider using these alarms as a means of ensuring the safety of staff who work alone, particularly at night.

"The system was originally introduced some years ago when the Council was last run by the Liberal Democrats," said Councillor Irene Henderson, Cabinet Member responsible for Social Care. "Our alarms can help older people to keep their independence for longer and offer peace of mind to anyone who is feeling frightened in their own home, for whatever reason. One push of the button and the Alarm Centre will respond."

Staff at the Alarm Centre in Stantonbury are on stand-by 24 hours a day, and are trained to deal with all sorts of emergencies. They can simply offer advice, reassurance and kindness to a panicking caller or can summon the police or fire brigade. They can even alert a friend, family member or neighbour.
