Recycling in Milton Keynes is featured in a new guide to best practice published by environmental champions Friends of the Earth.

Milton Keynes Council is one of only 15 local authorities featured in FoE's new publication 'Doorstep Recycling', which highlights how recycling is tackled in different places across the country.

Recycling levels in MK have almost doubled in recent years, with thousands of people embracing the Council's new initiatives such as the 'pink sack' scheme and, more recently, the green wheeled bins for garden waste.

In 2003/4 residents of Milton Keynes recycled or composted 24% of our waste compared to 16% in 2002/3, and 13% in 2001/2002.

Councillor Douglas McCall, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "This is an excellent endorsement of what we in Milton Keynes have known for some time - that the recycling service which the Liberal Democrats introduced just gets better and better.

"To gain recognition from an independent and renowned organisation such as Friends of the Earth is praise indeed."
