Green Bins Galore!6.48.12pm GMT Sat 13th Mar 2004 It's GREEN, CLEAN and it's back again! The Council's green bin scheme, introduced by Liberal Democrats in 2003, will be up and running again in the next week or two, providing a cheap and easy way of getting rid of garden waste. Despite some hiccups in distribution, last year's scheme using green wheeled bins was a runaway success, with more than 3,000 tonnes of garden waste being diverted away from landfill. In total a whopping 21,000 residents joined the scheme last year - and so far over 14,000 of those have renewed this year. But the Liberal Democrats are hoping to top last year's figures with many new users joining the scheme. Each bin (large or small) costs just £12, for a fortnightly collection, from March to November 2004. Cllr Douglas McCall, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This scheme was enormously successful and - like the pink sack recycling scheme - the people of Milton Keynes have really taken it to heart. We want to go one better this year and get even more people on board!" Ordering is easy. Application forms can be collected from the main Council offices or requested over the telephone; alternatively residents can join using a debit/credit card over the telephone.
