Make haste - join up for garden waste!

6.00.00pm GMT Tue 16th Dec 2003

Garden waste collections, the pink sack recycling scheme and the sale of compost bins, all introduced by the Liberal Democrat administration, have led to an almost 10% reduction in the waste we send to landfill!

In an ever growing city this is a huge achievement - so well done to everyone who has made a contribution to our recycling success!

Thanks to our pioneering garden waste collection scheme, last year we successfully collected garden waste from over 21,000 households. This year we hope to improve on this and increase our garden waste collection by a further 50% - our eventual aim being to compost all garden waste in Milton Keynes.

The benefits to the local community have been incredible with over 2,500 tonnes of garden waste being diverted from landfill. All the garden waste collected from the kerbside scheme has been sold as a soil conditioner to a local farm, while the green waste collected at recycling sites is composted and sold to the public there.

If you want to join the scheme, or to sign up for a second year, or you are leaving the city and want to leave the scheme, see the details on the Council website, or ring the Garden Waste Helpline on MK 252666.
